Vigor 2800 ADSL2+ Router
Firewall, VPN Device with Printer Port
& Optional 802.11-SuperG Wireless LAN

 Vigor2800G
802.11g Super-G Standard - 108Mb/s Total Wireless Bandwidth

The Vigor 2800 is our ADSL router for Internet access, firewall, VPN and Ethernet switching. The Vigor2800 includes features such as VLAN, QoS, Content filtering, VPN support for up to 16 tunnels and a USB printer port and support for all current ADSL technologies. Parental control and Peer-to-peer software restriction (blocking of Messenger, file-sharing etc.) is also supported on the Vigor2800.

ADSL Interface

The Vigor2800's primary WAN interface (its link to the outside world) is its built-in ADSL modem; the RJ11 socket connects straight into your ADSL enabled line (normally via a Microfilter). The unit provides support for ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ standards. The ADSL2/2+ compatibility means that you can take advantage of those new standards for their higher speed and greater reach/robustness.

ISDN Interface (Vigor 2800i/2800Gi)

The Vigor2800i model offers all of the same facilities as the standard Vigor2800 model but has an ISDN interface in addition to ADSL. This can connect to any ISDN2e or BT Highway/Midband line. The ISDN interface provides dial-backup in the event of your main ADSL connection being interrupted. Alternatively, the ISDN interface can be used on its own (as your main Internet connection) if you do not have an ADSL feed to connect to the Vigor2800i. When operating on ISDN, the Vigor2800i can be used both for shared Internet access and direct-dial ISDN LAN-to-LAN Wide Area Networking (dial in teleworkers or dial-in/out branch links) at the same time (one function on each B channel).

3G USB Modem Support - HSDPA

As mentioned above, you can use the Vigor 2800's USB port as a WAN interface to a USB 3G (cellular) modem, supporting the latest 'HSDPA' networks. HSDPA provides connection at up to 3.4Mb/s - much faster than previous cellular GSM/GPRS systems. This enables you to provide broadband access anywhere in the UK (subject to network coverage) without needing fixed lines. This can be in a temporary office, a coach, hotel or anywhere you like and your users can then browse web sites or check there email with ease. The USB modem and SIM is not supplied with the router; you obtain that separately from your cellphone company. The following USB modems/phones are currently supported:

Selectable QoS Assurance

The Vigor2800 supports selectable QoS (Quality of Service). This enables you to select specific protocols/services to have guaranteed levels of your Internet bandwidth. For example, if you need POP3 email to have priority, you could specify that 50% of your download (or upload, or both) bandwidth is reserved for POP3 when required. When it's not being used by POP3, the bandwidth is available for all other regular traffic. The Vigor2800 is very flexible on QoS - you can set several groups of services to have different priorities and bandwidth reservations.

Printer Port

The USB port on the back of the router allows you to connect most standard USB based printers and then print to them from any Windows98SE/XP/2000 PC, using built-in O/S support from any application, thus not needing to have a particular PC be on to provide printer sharing to its peers.

High Performance VPN

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a method for using a public network (Internet) to carry private data between offices or from teleworkers to office. The Vigor2800 can act as a VPN concentrator (endpoint) for up to 16 remote sites - i.e. running 16 simultanous tunnels to remote locations; either single teleworkers or remote networks/offices. The VPNs use induststry standard protocols including IPSec, PPTP and with high level encryption including 3DES, AES and MPPE. Cross compatibility with with common Microsoft Windows and MacOS VPN software clients is supported as well as compatibility with many other 3rd party VPN vendor's products, including Cisco™ Pix, Nokia™, Sonicwall™, Checkpoint™, ZyWall™ and Watchguard™. For more details on VPN, see DrayTek VPN.

Vigor 2800 Enhanced Firewall

The Vigor 2800 includes full packet-level Stateful Packet Inspection, not just the inherrent NAT security and port-blocking of other routers. The router also employs keep-state packet recording; put simply, this means that when a packet is sent out, a reciprocal record is kept to allow a packet coming back in the opposite direction, but a default 'deny' policy means that any packet arriving which appears unsolicited won't get through. With SPI enabled, this is stricter and more secure than NAT alone, and also works for non-NAT routed connections. The Vigor2800 also features automatic protection from Dos/DDos (Denial of Service/Distributed Denial of Service) attacks and IP anti-spoofing. User-definable filters also allow you to add additional protection to your connection (see right). For added confidence, potential or foiled attacks are logged and can be reported via the router's syslog facility.

Wireless LAN Features (Vigor2800G/VG only)

802.11g "Super-G" Performance

802.11 Super-G Logo  The Vigor2800G supports 802.11b and 802.11g standards for wireless with Super-G support. With a super-G compatible card/adaptor in your PC, this gives a total wireless bandwidth of 108Mb/s (compared to 54Mb/s on standard 802.11g). This gives a real-world throughput of up to 40Mb/s. Note that, at DrayTek, we live in the real world so we explain this carefully - do not expect to actually download at 108Mb/s - that is the total wireless capacity. Range and performance will vary depending on environment.

Wireless Security

The convenience of wireless LAN means that laptop users or those where running a cable is impractical can have access to your network and the internet, but security of Wireless LANs is vital; to this end, the Vigor2800G supports multiple independent levels of wireless security.

The Vigor2800G supports industry standard WEP and WPA protocols for encrypting your wireless LAN traffic as well as the new WPA2 standard. You can lock the router down further so that only PCs whose unique hardware ('MAC') address is authorised can access the router. An 'at a glance' list can show you all wireless clients connected (see example below). "SSID Stealthing" makes your base more difficult to other people to scan for. For larger wireless LANs, the Vigor2800G also supports 802.1x Authentication to allow a permitted wireless user database on your Radius server.

WDS - Wireless Distribution System

WDS provides two modes of operation to expand the Wireless range of your LAN. Where you install two or more compatible wireless routers, the WDS-enabled router becomes a satellite (slave) to the main base. In 'Repeater' Mode, the slave unit is within range of the main base unit and then repeats the main wireless signal into its own coverage area - this can effectively double the total range of the network (depending on the environment). In WDS Bridge mode, two physically separated LAN can be joined wirelessly, in order than they can communicate with each other. This is ideal where two offices need to be linked but a cable cannot be run (e.g. across a road).

Wireless VLAN & Rate Control

As with the VLAN facility on the wired (RJ45) ethernet ports, the Wireless VLAN facility enables you to create groups of LAN clients which are common (can communicate with each other) or distinct (cannot communicate with each other) whilst still allowing Internet access to all clients. Wireless VLAN Groups can be combined with VLAN groups on the wired ports too. Wireless Rate Control allows you to limit the wireless rate that a particular wireless client can use.

Vigor 2800 VoIP Features ('V' Models only)

The DrayTek Vigor2800V and 2800VG models provide two phone sockets, to provide Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) facilities. VoIP enables you to use your existing broadband capacity to carry regular voice calls to suitably equipped remote sites, for example another Vigor2800 VoIP-equipped router, to any other compatible VoIP device or, via a PSTN gateway to or from any other regular phone line or mobile phone worldwide.

Using the Voice-over-IP facility is simple. You connect any standard telephone (corded or cordless) to one of the phone ports on the Vigor2800V. Although you can dial IP addresses, you would normally dial someone's 'SIP Address' which they obtain from their SIP Registrar (such as DrayTEL). You hear ringing and bust signals just like on a normal phone line. The voice calls (speech) are digitised and compressed in real time to make maximum use of the bandwidth and DrayTek's high performance 'codecs' provide 'toll quality' voice calls (quality similar to a regular fixed telephone line). A preset QoS system automatically gives voice traffic priority over other traffic without your available bandwidth.

Vigor2600V VOIP Calling between two sites

The calls between the two sites above are free of charge, making use of your existing always-on ADSL connection, but cost isn't the only advantage; using VOIP means that you have additional call capacity in your home or office, without tying up your regular phone line. You can also make calls to regular phone lines, via a PSTN gateway such as DrayTEL (see later).

Note : Sockets vary with model.

Multiple Simulataneous SIP Registrations

For the best VoIP integration, you set up accounts with SIP-compatible VoIP gateways, such as DrayTEL. You may have several VoIP accounts with your SIP provider (such as DrayTEL) or you may have accounts with various different SIP providers. The Vigor2800V allows you to set up up to 6 different accounts, and choose which of the two phone ports each of them rings (or either or both). You can also set your preferred SIP account for outgoing calls on each phone port:

Multiple SIP Registrars

Hotline Phone

Hotline Facility

The Vigor2800V lets you select a preset destination for one or both of your phone ports so that as soon as you lift the handset, you are connected to the destination, which can be a VoIP destination or PSTN (via a PSTN Gateway such as DrayTEL). This is useful, for example, for teleworkers who only need to contact head office, or perhaps for a taxi service where customers can be put straight through to your office. It saves time dialling and prevents calling other unauthorised destinations.

Phone Directory - Quick Dialling

Rather than having to dial a whole IP or SIP address or phone number each time, the Vigor2800V has a quick-dial directory for up to 99 entries so that you can use a short code (of your choice). The router will automatically keep the SIP registrar updated with your current location (by IP address) so you do not need a fixed IP address.

Dial Plan Setup

Automatic QoS Assurance for VoIP

Traffic levels from your local users to the Internet can vary; if someone else on your router is downloading, that will affect your speeds. Mostly that's quite tolerable - you just get your data a little slower but you wouldn't normally notice. With VoIP, things are different. A voice call has to be digitised, transmitted to the remote end and the turned back into an analogue waveform (sound!) in real-time. If part of a packet is delayed then the sound becomes jerky and intermittent which at best is annoying and in worst cases intolerable. The Vigor2800V firstly uses efficient codecs designed to make the best use of available bandwidth, but secondly includes automatic QoS Assurance. QoS (Quality of Service) Assurance reserves part of your Internet bandwidth for voice calls whilst a voice call is active (the reserved bandwidth is available for regular use if there is no Voice call active). This means that, regardless of what else other people are doing on your Network, you will always have the necessary inbound and outbound bandwidth reserved exclusively for Voice.

PSTN Integration via DrayTEL service

Calls between VoIP users can be made simply by dialling each other's IP addresses, but as IP addresses are long and can change, a SIP registrar (such as DrayTEL) can allocate you a more convenient ID for people to call you on. A SIP ID/address, for example, might be 899899@draytel.org. Then other SIP users can call you on your DrayTEL address (even if they don't use DrayTEL themselves). DrayTEL - How does it all fit together ?
The DrayTEL server also provides a gateway to the PSTN. This means that you can not only make free calls to other VoIP/SIP users, but you can call any regular telephone line or mobile (calls to the PSTN are chargeable at low DrayTEL rates). DrayTEL can also allocate your own personal '0870' (national rate) phone number for anyone to call you on.

With your router you'll receive a voucher entitling to a free DrayTEL account, free allocation of your 0870 number and £2.00 worth of call credit to make calls to regular phone lines worldwide (you can buy more credit). Remember call credit is only needed for calls to the PSTN - VoIP-to-VoIP calls are always free (so get your friends to buy a Vigor2500V too!). There is no charge to you to receive calls from the PSTN via your DrayTEL 0870 number and there is no rental charge.

Note : The DrayTEL service is operated independently of DrayTek Corp. and usage is subject to DrayTEL's own service terms. Voucher valid in UK/NI only.

"Underneath the Vigor2800VG's uninspiring blue body lurks a feature-rich piece of VoIP hardware.... It's a brilliant, extremely flexible wireless VoIP router.....Call quality is good, thanks to the router setting aside bandwidth when you're using the voice facility. "

"Of the different manufacturers tested, we were able to get both the Vigor2600VG and Vigor2500V routers up and running and making VoIP calls in a matter of minutes, both to other SIP users and out to the public phone network. Call quality in both instances was excellent using the default codecs. Both Vigor routers have features to recommend them and with good support from manufacturer and distributor, they're well worth looking at. "

"As with all DrayTek's Vigors, the Vigor2500V offers a wealth of features and the VoIP telephony works particularly well. At the price, it won't be long before you start saving money on phone calls either. Other SIP users will have noticed that call quality can be destroyed by by using the same broadband connection for heavy data use - particularly upstream. The Vigor2500V's QoS Assurance gets around this by dedicating bandwidth to the telephony when it's in operation so you always get decent quality."

"Setup is incredibly easy: you just plug the ADSL phone line into the Vigor, open its Web configuration page and tell it to autodetect your ADSL settings. Once it's done that, just enter the username and password given by your ISP, and you're off. Ease of use was a recurring theme with this product; The Vigor's simple Web-style controls make it easy to set up a VPN, and we were soon browsing our network from a location 10 miles away. The Vigor is also fast. It completed our long-range (wireless) file transfer test in just 59 seconds: one of the best times we've seen."

Example Scenario
Integration with an office PBX

The above scenario shows use of a Vigor2800V. Study the diagram to familiarise yourself with what is going on. We have included a regular telephone user, Mrs.Brown. Mrs. Brown does not have any Internet connection and certainly no VOIP router; just her old-fashioned normal telephone.

The main office, on the right, has a PBX (telephone switchboard) which has various lines coming into it, and many extensions coming out of it, including the two users shown - Matt and Alex. An incoming call can arrive at the office PBX via the normal analogue lines (for example if Mrs. Brown calls) or via a VOIP call coming from the the FXS output of the Vigor2800V - for example if Tom calls from the remote office with another Vigor2600V.

Content Filtering

The Vigor 2800 also helps protect against internal Internet abuse with its content filter which can block specified sites according to matched keywords which you specify - i.e. keywords within URLs (e.g. "hotmail"). You can alternatively set the router to only allow access to specific pre-set site - all other sites are blocked - i.e. you can select either a blacklist or a whitelist. Additionally, you can block Java/ActiveX applet downloads, cookies as well as HTML download of specific file types (e.g. ZIP, EXE, multimedia etc.). This all provides a deterrent to internal abuse of your Internet resources and re-inforce your local Internet user policies for staff or family members.

To protect your Internet connection from abuse or your users from unsuitable content, you can block popular Peer-to-Peer applications, as well as Instant Messaging software. You can set a time schedule so that the activities are allowed at only certain times of day.

P2P Blocking

Surfcontrol

For more comprehensive protection, you can use Surfcontrol™ filtering, also known as Parental Control which permits access only to web sites within your selected categories (e.g. adult, gambling, news etc.). You can also exclude all 'uncategorised' sites. A 30-day trial licence is supplied with the router; renewal is subject to an annual subscription fee - currently approximately £25 (for 10 users, subject to change; Surfcontrol is an independent organsiation to DrayTek). As with other protection, the Surfcontrol filtering can be turned on/off by a time schedule at certain times of day.

Surfcontrol Categories

Virtual LAN (VLAN)

The Vigor 2800's VLAN facility enables you to segment each of the router's four Ethernet ports, so that each is a separate virtual LAN. You can create VLAN groups which include or exclude any of the ports so that groups, departments and companies can communicate with each other, or not. For example, two companies could share the same broadband feed, without having access to each other's networks. For more details of VLAN, see here.

Windows Syslog Tool

The Vigor2800 comes with its Syslog tool; one or more PCs can run this syslog tool so that route status and activity is continuously logged. This includes information about individual PC/User activity as well as firewall rule matching and general router operation. Syslog programs are available from 3rd parties for other Operating Systems too. The Vigor2800 also supports SNMP (with MIB-II), allowing an SNMP client to monitor the router's LAN activity, again locally or remotely.
