Vigor 2830 Series ADSL Router Firewall

The Vigor2830 is the latest generation of our flagship ADSL router/firewall range, winner of the PC Pro wireless router award for three years in a row. This latest series includes support for professional features such as VLAN tagging, Gigabit Ethernet and WiFi (ess models). The Vigor 2830's secondary WAN interface can be connected to other modems now or later (e.g. a second ADSL, BT Infinity or cable modem etc.).

Packed with features, the Vigor 2830 offers truly comprehensive ADSL connectivity and security.

Compatible with all variants of ADSL (including ADSLMax, ADSL2+ and Annex M) the Vigor 2830 can also be used for cable-modem and leased line applications using its additional gigabit ethernet WAN port. A four port Gigabit switch on the LAN side provides high speed connectivity for your server or other local PCs, for the highest speed local data transfer. Security features include content filtering, web application controls and new object based firewall management system.

Robust & Comprehensive Firewall

Security is always taken seriously with DrayTek routers. The firewall protects against attacks including DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, IP-based attacks and access by unauthorised remote systems. Wireless, Ethernet and VPN are also protected by various protection systems. The latest ('Version 3') DrayTek object-based firewall allows even more setup flexibility than ever, enabling you to create combinations of users, rules and restrictions to suit multi-departmental organisations. The Vigor 2830 now also allows selective direction firewall rules of LAN to WAN, WAN to LAN or LAN to VPN. In addition, QoS (Quality of Service Assurance) can now be selectively applied to specific users.

IPv6 - Next Generation Internet Routing

The Vigor 2830 now supports IPv6 - the successor to the current IPv4 addressing system that has been used since the Internet was first created. IPv4 address space is full up and IPv6 allows for much more efficient routing and a larger address space. IPv6 is supported both from your own ISP, but if your ISP does not (yet) support IPv6, the Vigor 2850 also supports IPv6 broker/tunnel services to provide IPv6 access using either TSPC or AICCU via 3rd party IPv6 providers. Web Content Filtering

The Content control features of the Vigor 2830 allow you to set restrictions on web site access, blocking download of certain file or data types, blocking specific web sites with whitelists or blacklists, blocking IM/P2P applications or other potentially harmful or wasteful content. Restrictions can be per user, per PC or univeral. Using DrayTek's GlobalView service, you can block whole categories of web sites (e.g. gambling, adult sites etc.), subject to an annual subscription to the Globalview service, which is continuously updated with new or changed site categorisations or sites which have become compromised (such as infected with Malware). A free 30-day trial is included with your new router.

Triple-WAN Load Balancing & Backup

As well as the primary ADSL (WAN) interface, the Vigor 2830 features two other WAN connections. WAN2 is Ethernet (Gigabit) and WAN3 is a USB port for connection of a 3G modem. WAN2 (Ethernet) can connect to a second ADSL modem (e.g. Vigor 120), a cable modem or any other Ethernet-based Internet feed. The multiple WAN interfaces can be used either for WAN-Backup or load balancing.

WAN-Backup provides contingency (redundancy) in case of your primary ADSL line or ISP suffering temporary outage). Internet Traffic will be temporarily routed via the secondary Internet access. When normal services is restored to your primary ADSL line, all traffic is switch back to that.

If you don't have ADSL, the Ethernet WAN port can instead be used as your primary/only Internet connection (using NAT) so the same router can be used for either ADSL or Ethernet Internet connections.

The USB port provides Internet connectivity (main, backup or load balanced) by connecting to a compatible USB modem (or cellphone) for access to the high speed 3G cellular networks from UK providers such as Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, 3 and T-Mobile. If you don't have ADSL at all, the USB/3G access method can be used as your primary/only Internet connection, ideal for temporary locations, mobile applications or where broadband access is not available. In addition you can instead connect a compatible analogue modem to use analogue dial-up connections for failover in the event of your broadband failing. 802.1q Tagged, Wireless & Port Based VLAN

The Vigor2830 features a hugely flexible VLAN system. In its simplest form, each of the four Gigabit LAN ports can be isolated from each other, for example to feed four different companies or departments but keeping their local traffic completely separated. For more sophisticated scenarios, the Vigor 2830 includes tagged VLANs (802.1q) whereby data is marked with a VLAN identifier. This identifier can be read by an onward Ethernet switch and directed to specific ports or just passed to the LAN for specific VLAN clients to pick up; priorities can also be applied for LAN-side QoS. The VLANs can each be tied into each of the different IP subnets that the router may also be operating, to provide even more isolation. On the Wireless-equipped models (Vigor2830n / 2830Vn) each of the wireless SSIDs can also be grouped within one of the VLANs.

The Vigor2830 also supports up to four private IP subnets on the LAN. Each can be independent (isolated) or common (able to communicate with each other). This is ideal for departmental or multi-occupancy applications.

User Management/Authentication

The Vigor 2830 has built-in user management which allows you to provide internet access to users based on their own unique login (stored in the router, or on an external Radius server). Accounts can be restricted by schedules or maximum usage times but also any other aspect of the firewall or content filtering can be applied on a user-by-user basis. For example, a sales department might not be allowed access to social networking sites except at lunch time, or in a school, teachers and staff have more access permitted than pupils. This works with Wireless (WiFi) clients too so is ideal for guest or temporary access as users can be isolated from the rest of the company LAN.

Reliable and High-Performance WiFi ('n' models only)

The Vigor 2830 Series 'n' models feature 802.11n wireless LAN specification and has been certified by the WiFi alliance for cross compatibility and WiFi compliance (including WPA/WPA2 and WMM). The Vigor2830n and Vn models includes a hardware co-processor for WiFi which can provide an increase of up to 40Mb/s for WiFi connections compared to our other models.

802.11n provides a total wireless bandwidth of up to 300Mb/s using new methods such as packet aggregation and channel bonding. Throughput depends on your own environment (factors such as obstructions, number of hosts and distance all make a significant difference), but actual transfer speeds of over 100Mb/s are achievable (based on our real world tests). In addition, 802.11n provides greater coverage and resilience to interference compared to previous wireless standards thanks to the MIMO technology and the Vigor's triple-antennae diversity arrangement. This offset arrangement of aerials provides offset paths between hosts so that interference can be overcome.

Selectable Dual-Band

The Vigor 2830n-Plus and 2830Vn-Plus includes Dual-Band technology. Most commonly, WiFi operates in the "2.4Ghz" band but with the number of people using Wifi these days, all sharing the same channels as well as DECT and Bluetooth also using the same band, congestion is a real problem. Everyone has to share the same bandwidth, and 802.11n uses three times as much as previous technologies. The Vigor2830n-Plus and Vn-Plus models can be switched to use the 5.8Ghz band instead which is far less congested. If your laptop of wireless device does not support the 5.8Ghz band, you will need a add a USB 'dongle', also available from DrayTek.

Wireless Security

The Vigor 2830 Series provides several independent levels of security including encryption (up to WPA2), authentication (802.11x) and methods such as MAC address locking and DHCP fixing to restrict access to authorised users only. The Web interface lets you see how many and which clients are currently connected as well as their current bandwidth usage. An 'instant' block lets you disconnect a wireless user temporarily in case of query. The Wireless VLAN facility allows you to isolate wireless clients from each other or from the 'wired' LAN.

The Vigor2830 wireless versions also allow guest access with password protection so that visitors can use your WiFi access, but only with a password which you set for them. When the user connects to your wireless LAN, they are firstly presented with your login screen before any Internet access is permitted. This is in addition to any encryption system you have running.

The Multiple SSID features enables you to have up to four distinct or common virtual wireless access points. For example, you could have one for company usage, with access to your company LAN and another for public access which allows internet surfing only. Setting up wireless security is made easier thanks to the WPS feature (WiFi protected setup) whereby your client PC can get it's security keys by pressing a button on the front of the router.

If your laptop PC's built-in wireless doesn't support 802.11n wireless or the 5.8GhZ band and you want to take advantage of that, you can use the optional Vigor N65 USB adaptor. Click on 'accessories' for details.

For specialist or more demanding coverage applications, optional aerials can be used with the Vigor 2830 to potentially increase the range of wireless coverage (depending on environment) or provide directional coverage in order that your wireless transmission is focussed and concentrated into one direction only, for example into a room or across open space. With the increasing popularity of wireless LANs, you will want to choose the least congested wireless channel (Nos. 1-13) for yours so the Vigor can scan and provide a list of all devices in the vicinity so that you can choose the best channel (see screenshot below).

Wireless LAN WDS Facility

Vigor 2830 'n' models support WDS (Wireless Distribution System) which enables you to use the wireless capability to bridge to another network, within wireless range. You need an additional compatible wireless router for this of course. Here is a simple example:

With WDS bridging, both networks should be within the same logical IP subnet (IP address range). Once set up, all of the PCs on both sides of the link can access each other, across the wireless bridge. Local wireless devices such as a laptop can continue to use their local access point.

Vigor 2830n WDS Repeater

An additional mode, as shown above, called 'repeating', allows you to set up a third station. In the diagram below, the router at 'B' is set up in repeating mode, relaying traffic between LANs at A and C. Therefore, all three physical networks can communicate with each other over the wireless links.


Important Note : Wireless performance (speed and range) always depends on your specific environment and will vary considerably. Factors affecting performance include wireless traffic, other networks nearby, site construction, walls, ceilings and other electronic equipment nearby. Speeds quoted are the maximum wireless capacity, including RX/TX capacity, protocol overheads and all clients/hosts connected.

Voice-over-IP Features ('Vn' Model)

The Vigor 2830Vn provides two analogue phone ports and an analogue line port provide full PSTN and VoIP integration on the same phones, via both the Internet and your regular analogue line. The two phones can be used independently and simultaneously for both incoming and outgoing calls.

As well as the two telephone ports, a third port, the Analogue Line port, connects into your regular analogue line (PSTN/POTS*). This then gives the telephones access to your analogue line to allow you to make calls as well as your VoIP facility (you can select the PSTN line instead of VoIP by dialling #0). Incoming calls are automatically switched through to your telephone(s) (either one or both) so that each phone can be used for both VoIP and POTS calls. Both telephones plugged into your router have access to VoIP and your analogue line. In addition, using the 'Digit-Map' facility you can set rules about particular call destinations using either the POTS line or your SIP/VoIP service. For example, local calls can be routed via your PSTN line (if you have a free calls package for example) whereas international calls can go via your preferred VoIP provider; there is flexibility to have several digit-map rules.

As well as connecting with a SIP/VoIP gateway directly (such as DrayTEL), the vigor2830Vn can register its phones as extensions on a remote IP PBX, such as DrayTek's Vigor IPPBX products, so this is an idea teleworker solution.

*POTS = Plain Old Telephone Service - The traditional analogue phone voice line in your home/office, e.g. B.T. That line may also be carrying your ADSL data signal.

3G/4G Cellular Data Features

The Vigor 2830 Series USB port can host a compatible 3G modem or cellphone for access to the cellular network for full Internet Access. Most UK networks now provide high speed HSDPA data connections at up to 3.6Mb/s download speed. The 3G connection can be used as your primary/only Internet access, or as backup to your main ADSL line connection. This is not only ideal for homes or offices which don't want to pay fixed line + broadband rental, but also for temporary locations, or those to where fixed lines aren't available.

With the Vigor 2830n/2830Vn, your local users can be connected wirelessly to the router, so instant free 'hotspots' can be deployed quickly and easily. Mains power is required for the router's PSU, but this could be from a mobile generator or equivalent so you need to plan for this.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

USB Memory

The Vigor 2830's USB port can also be used to add storage memory to the unit in the form of a USB memory key (as shown right) or for higher capacity a USB hard drive (normally requires its own power). The Vigor 2830 then provides FTP access file uploading/downloading which can be from the local LAN or from anywhere on the Internet - ideal for a simple to deploy file depository. Access can be 'public' or using usernames and passwords, each of which can have their own directories and/or file access rights. As well as FTP, file sharing is available as a Windows 'network drive'. You can also use Windows Explorer to view and access the contents of the USB drive.

If you do have a USB memory key connected, you can also have the router save it's system logs (syslog) to that memory instead of to a connecting computer; useful for technical personnel (SysAdmins).

The NAS facility uses any FAT32 formatted device (includes USB memory sticks, USB hard drives etc.) and supports a transfer rate of 12Mb/s.
