Vigor Routers support multiple IP subnets, enabling different groups of LAN clients to operate within separate IP address ranges. When VLAN (Virtual LAN) is configured, even more subnets can be utilized by segmenting LAN clients into distinct groups. With a VLAN-capable switch, devices from various VLANs can connect through a single LAN port on the router. The router distinguishes the traffic based on the VLAN tags attached to the packets. This article explains how to implement multiple subnets using tag-based VLANs.

Vigor Router with 3 VLANs

Vigor Router setup

  1. Navigate to Configuration > LAN > LAN Networks, then click "Add" to create a new LAN Network with the following steps:
    1. Enter a name for the LAN Network.
    2. Specify the private IPv4 address.
    3. Configure the DHCP Server settings as needed.
    4. Click Apply to save the new profile.

  2. Go to Configuration > LAN > VLAN List and click "Add" to create a new VLAN with the following details:
    1. Enter the VLAN ID (a number between 1 and 4096).

  3. Navigate to Configuration > LAN > Interface VLAN, and configure the Interface VLAN settings as follows:
    1. Choose "Trunk" as the Port Type. (For example, use Port 2.)

  4. VigorSwitch setup

    1. In this example, we’re using a VigorSwitch PQ2200xb.

To create VLANs on the VigorSwitch WebUI, navigate to Configuration > VLAN Setup > Existing VLAN. Click the "Add" button, then enter the VLAN ID and VLAN Name.

Ensure that the VLAN ID matches the tag configured on the Vigor Router.

      VLAN setup

    2. Navigate to Configuration > Port Setup > VLAN to configure VLAN settings as follows:
      1. Assign the VLAN ID to the uplink port (e.g., 2.5GE1).
      2. Set the Interface VLAN mode to Trunk and select all relevant VLAN IDs under Tagged VLAN.
      3. Click OK to save the configuration.

      VLAN setup

    3. Configure the VLAN ID for the client port (e.g., 2.5GE2) as follows:
      1. Set the Interface VLAN mode to Access.
      2. Assign the desired VLAN ID as the PVID. (Note: The PVID must match the VLAN ID.)
      3. Click OK to save the settings.

      VLAN setup

    4. With the above configuration, any device connected to Port 2 of the switch will be part of the router's LAN3 subnet and should receive an IP address within the 192.168.3.0/24 range. You can verify the connection by checking the device's entry in the router’s Monitoring > ARP Table page.
