When Should You Upgrade Your Business Router?
XIV. Miscellaneous Questions
Your business router is easy to overlook. If your internet connection works, it can be tempting to assume that your router is doing its job.
But your network can change significantly over time.
You may have upgraded your broadband, added more employees, introduced new cloud applications, expanded your Wi-Fi network or started working across multiple sites.
As your requirements change, your existing router may no longer provide the performance, connectivity or features your business needs.
So, when is it time to upgrade?
Here are nine signs that your business router may have reached its limits.
1. Your broadband is faster than your router can effectively handle
UK broadband speeds are continuing to increase. Ofcom reported that the average maximum download speed reached 285Mbit/s in 2026, while 89% of UK premises had access to gigabit-capable broadband by Q1 2026. For UK SMEs, this was 87% by July 2026.
If your broadband is below 1Gbit/s, check that your router has sufficient WAN and firewall performance. If you're moving to 1Gbit/s or above, make sure the router can support the full speed and consider whether you need faster Ethernet interfaces such as 2.5GbE or 10GbE.
An older router can become a bottleneck, even when your broadband connection itself is capable of much higher speeds. It’s worth considering more than just the advertised internet speed.
Also look at:
- WAN interface speeds
- Firewall throughput
- LAN interface speeds
- Number of simultaneous connections
- VPN throughput
If you've recently upgraded your broadband, it's a good time to check whether your router is still suitable.

2. Your existing router is no longer receiving updates or support
Security is an important reason to consider upgrading your router. As your router sits between your business and the internet, keeping it up to date helps protect your network from new security threats.
As products get older, they eventually reach the end of their product lifecycle. Once a router reaches End of Life (EoL), security updates are no longer guaranteed, which can leave your business relying on older technology that may not be protected against newly discovered vulnerabilities.
Every product has a supported lifecycle, and DrayTek publishes lifecycle information to help customers understand how long individual products remain supported.
Checking your router's lifecycle status as part of a regular IT review can help you plan upgrades in advance, rather than waiting until your existing equipment reaches the end of its supported period.
If your router is approaching End of Life, it's worth planning an upgrade before security updates are no longer guaranteed.
3. VPN performance is becoming an issue
VPNs are increasingly important for businesses with remote workers, home workers and multiple offices.
However, VPN connections can place additional demands on a router.
If users are experiencing slow VPN connections, or you're adding more remote workers or site-to-site VPN connections, your existing router may no longer be suitable.
When upgrading, consider:
- VPN throughput
- VPN tunnel capacity
- Number of simultaneous VPN users
- Remote-access requirements
- Site-to-site VPN requirements
The right router should provide enough VPN performance for your current requirements while allowing room for future growth.

4. You need additional WAN connections
Your business may no longer rely on a single internet connection.
You might want to add a second connection for:
- Internet failover
- Increased resilience
- Load balancing
- A second fibre connection
- 4G or 5G backup
If your existing router only supports the WAN configuration you currently use, upgrading to a router with additional WAN capabilities can give you much greater flexibility.
For businesses that rely heavily on cloud applications, VoIP or remote access, having a backup connection can also help reduce the impact of an internet outage.

5. You're introducing 4G or 5G backup
A second fixed-line connection isn't the only way to improve internet resilience.
4G and 5G can provide an alternative connection when your primary internet service becomes unavailable.
This can be particularly useful for businesses that need to remain connected during broadband outages or where installing a second fixed connection isn't practical.
Depending on the router, cellular connectivity may be provided through integrated 4G/5G, a compatible USB connection, or other supported options. Selected DrayTek solutions also support SIM and eSIM connectivity.
When considering a cellular backup, think about:
- 4G or 5G availability
- Mobile network coverage
- Data requirements
- SIM or eSIM support
- Failover capabilities

6. Your Wi-Fi requirements have changed
As your business grows, so can the demands on your Wi-Fi. More users, more devices and bandwidth-heavy applications can put increasing pressure on an older wireless network.
Wi-Fi 7 is the next step in wireless technology, offering higher speeds, lower latency and greater capacity for busy business networks. DrayTek's latest Wi-Fi 7 products, including the Vigor 2867be, Vigor 2928be and VigorAP 1070C, are designed to support the demands of modern multi-gigabit networks.
It's worth considering:
- How many wireless users and devices you have
- Whether your existing Wi-Fi can handle current demands
- Whether your devices support Wi-Fi 7
- Whether you need faster wireless speeds and greater capacity
- Whether your network infrastructure can support multi-gigabit Wi-Fi
For larger businesses, a dedicated access point setup can provide a more flexible solution:
DrayTek Router → DrayTek Switch → Multiple DrayTek Vigor Access Points
This makes it easier to extend Wi-Fi coverage and capacity as your business grows.
If your Wi-Fi is becoming a bottleneck, it may be time to consider upgrading your router or adding Wi-Fi 7 access point.
7. You're running out of network interfaces
Sometimes the problem is simply that you've run out of ports.
As your business adds more equipment, you may need additional Ethernet connections for:
- Computers
- Printers
- VoIP phones
- Servers
- CCTV
- Network switches
- Wireless access points
A network switch can provide additional ports, but if you're also looking for faster connectivity, additional WAN interfaces or different types of network connection, it may be time to review the router itself.
Modern business networks may also require higher-speed interfaces such as 2.5GbE, 10GbE or SFP/SFP+.

8. You need VLANs or better network segmentation
As your network becomes more complex, keeping every device on the same network may no longer be appropriate.
- Staff devices
- Guest Wi-Fi
- VoIP
- CCTV
- IoT devices
- Servers
VLANs allow different types of traffic and devices to be separated while using the same physical network infrastructure.
If your existing router doesn't provide the VLAN or subnet capabilities you need, upgrading can give you greater control over how your network is structured.
9. You're adding more users and devices
Businesses rarely stay the same size.
As you add employees, computers, phones, printers, CCTV, IoT devices and other network equipment, the demands placed on your router increase.
A router that was perfectly suitable for a small office may not provide the capacity or performance required by a growing business.
If you're continually adding devices or your network has become significantly busier, it may be time to review your router.
Consider:
- Number of connected devices
- Number of simultaneous connections
- Firewall performance
- Available LAN ports
- Wi-Fi requirements
- Future growth

Do You Need to Upgrade Your Business Router?
If you've recognised one or more of these issues, it doesn't automatically mean you need the most powerful router available.
Instead, look at what has changed in your network and choose your next router accordingly.
| If your business has... | Consider looking for... |
|---|---|
| Faster broadband | Higher WAN and firewall performance |
| More users and devices | Greater connection capacity |
| Increased VPN usage | Higher VPN performance and capacity |
| Multiple internet connections | Multi-WAN and load balancing |
| Internet resilience requirements | WAN failover and 4G/5G support |
| Growing Wi-Fi requirements | Built-in Wi-Fi or dedicated access points |
| More network equipment | Additional/faster interfaces |
| More complex networks | VLAN and subnet support |
| An unsupported router | A current, supported platform |
Don't Just Replace Your Old Router with Another Old-Spec Router
If you're upgrading because your existing router has reached its limits, consider what your business will need over the next few years.
Your next router should ideally provide enough capacity for your current network while leaving room for growth.
Think about:
- Your current and future broadband speed
- Number of users and devices
- VPN requirements
- Backup connectivity
- Wi-Fi requirements
- Network segmentation
- Ethernet speeds
- Future expansion
Choosing with future requirements in mind can help avoid having to replace your router again when your business grows.
