Enabling WAN/P6 and other ports on Vigor 2927 - DHCP issues was created by Jonathan
Hi all,
I have a a Vigor 2927 with a number of VLANs on it. I've enabled WAN2/P6 and disabled the WAN setting so it acts as an additional ethernet port. I followed this guide: https://www.draytek.com/support/knowledge-base/7407
I've been into LAN > VLAN and ticked P6 on VLAN2/LAN2 so port 2 is assigned to that VLAN and it should assign an IP from the pool of that LAN (LAN2).
I'm a little confused though - when I connect my laptop directly to Port 6 in 'Ethernet' mode it won't pick up a DHCP address from the assigned VLAN on that port. Instead it assigns an APIPA 169.254.x.x IP.
I have to put the laptop into my switch which in turn picks up an IP address via DHCP from the Vigor 2927 then when I connect the laptop back into P6 in the router it picks up the same IP address.
If I release/renew when the laptop is connected directly to the Draytek it won't pick up the IP address again. I think its got something to do with DHCP leases.....is this how it should work by design when connecting directly to the router? If I plug my laptop back into the network switch then back into the router, it picks up the IP address from the routers ARP table.
I've attached some screenshots
thanks all

If you plug your laptop into Port 6 (or indeed 2 or 5) how does it "know" from which VLAN it should obtain an address? You have both VLAN0 and 2 assigned to those ports. Presumably it works via your switch because the switch is tag aware? Or am I talking nonsense?

No, you're not talking nonsense and thank you for the reply.
I actually had my configuration set up as you described but it didn't work when I plugged a laptop in (see image below) - I believe this setup simply states "Port 6 is untagged on VLAN 2, only assign an IP from that VLAN to the device" i.e its not tagged. Port based VLAN setup?
I've put the configuration back to the below screenshot. Not at home at the moment (VPN'ed in and made the change):

I guess you can't check since you're not at home but do you have the same problem if you plug the laptop into port 5 with the config you show above?

If I then plug the laptop into a random data socket in my house (which goes back to a switch) then the laptop pulls an IP address 10.7.32.x from the correct VLAN.
Then if I go back to the router, and plug the laptop into port 5 or 6, it assigns the same IP as above.
If I then do a ipconfig /release /renew (still plugged into the router) then I get a 169.254.x.x IP!!
I think its something to do with DHCP lease times - once the device has an allocated IP address, it seems to be ok until that lease expires. Once it expires and I plug the laptop back into the router, it won't assign a new IP (unless I connect the laptop back to a random data socket in the house).
Bizarre.

My setup on a 2927ax is somewhat similar to yours - I've just tried unplugging this very PC (from port 5 in this case) and re-plugging, also ipconfig release and renew - no problems at all with IP address. But I do use IP binding a lot - maybe worth trying that with your laptop.
