2928 - Using WAN2 SFP+ port to BTnet ADVA issue

Hi,

Has anybody successfully managed to setup a 2928 using the WAN2 SFP port to a 'wires-only' BTnet service that terminates with an ADVA FSP150 unit?

We've tried multiple 1Gbps SFP's with no joy, set to either 1G or Auto-Negotiate. The 'Access' side LED remains red.  However if we take the same service through a media converter and into the RJ45 WAN1 port it comes up (green) straight away.  (the combo ports that are set to active are the two SFP+'s ports).

We do have a support call open with Draytek already but would just appreciate if anybody else has already got this working.

I can't claim relevant experience but I might be contemplating the following.

1) If the same SFP is used in the media converter and the 2928 then any optical issues should be eliminated (multi mode/single mode, wavelengths, crosses etc.)

2) Is it possible to power cycle the Adva with the Draytek on (just in case there is some startup thing).?

3) I assume your working settings using the media converter have the correct IP address etc. as I might guess that the BT service will be provisioned with a set of configuration you need to use.

So: -
1 - Yes, this is our thinking too.
2 - Possible, but we haven't done this yet.
3 - The two WAN circuits are configured identically so that we can swap between them for testing - as you state these are all provided by BT.

We can even plug from the ADVA straight to any SFP+ equipped switch and the 'Access' light goes green. This alone is making us think that it's the Draytek presentation that's somehow at fault.

One other thought. It’s a 10GbE port. While it will negotiate to 1GbE (seemingly from the specs) does a 1GbE SFP get recognised or is it just that a 10GbE will work with a 1GbE at the other end?

The port is configurable as Auto/1G/10G.

The ADVA is supplied with a 1G SFP and you are not allowed to change this (we tried once and BT cut us off!).

So, we've attempted with 6 different 1G SFP's so (set to either Auto or 1G) - none work.

It seems like the 2928 doesn't like your SFPs but I'm not convinced this is the problem.

As you have a media converter can you try something more basic, put the best bet SFP into the 2928 WAN and get some sort of domestic broadband router.

Power up the domestic router, RJ45 from a LAN port to the media converter then fibre to the 2928 and your 1Gb/s SFP.

Set the 2928 WAN to DHCP and the interface should come up and you should be able to get to the management page of the domestic router (subject to any address range issues).

If that works (and the media converter worked with the Adva) then the physical layer (which is the apparent problem) should be working, so you could plug the fibre from the media converter to the Adva and it SHOULD stand a chance of coming up.

Then it's configuration. The Adva won't (probably) be DHCP but I expect you will have been provided with a configuration for your service.
