2928 with BT FTTP 1000/115

Hi all, I have a BT FTTP 1000/115 installed. The presentation from BT is Ethernet for the WAN. I have moved from a working Draytek connected on PPPoE over Ethernet to a 2928. The circuit shows as active, and I get an IP address and gateway address, but no internet connectivity past the 10.X.X.X address assigned to the 2928 WAN1 interface (note the old Draytek gets a public IP address, not a private one).

Has anyone had a similar issue? I get the feeling the 2928 could be the wrong model to use for this. BT suggest the router is the issue. Does it require some kind of middleware modem? If so, is anything suggested?

Shouldn't be any issue.

The fact you're getting differing IP ranges between the two routers suggests you've got the config wrong somewhere. I can't see how anything at the BT end would be assigning a private IP to your WAN interface.


i.e. you've configured the right WAN interface with your PPPoE details ?  Maybe just configure them both with the settings then it won't matter whether you've used WAN1 or WAN3 (and if using WAN3 you've set it to be a WAN port and not a LAN port ?)

Yes, correct PPPoE is configured on the WAN1 interface. Tried with and without Autohunt.

Tried with and without VLAN 101 in Service and Customer tagging. I expect not to need that as the BT FTTP ONT device takes care of that.

With VLAN on I get no PPPoE session anyway, confirming that is correct.

If your new DrayTek is a multi-WAN model (like the Vigor 2865, 2866, or 2927), WAN1 is often hardwired physically to the internal DSL modem RJ11 port, not the Ethernet port.If you have plugged the ONT Ethernet cable into a port labeled P4/WAN2 or P6/WAN2, your configuration changes must be made under WAN2, not WAN1.

However, there is no Modem or RJ11 port on this device anyway, but WAN 1 seemed the correct Ethernet port for this Draytek model.

Hi,
The ONT handles the sync for the connection and so a modem is not required. Standard setup would be for a router to be plugged in directly to the ONT.
The router should be set with VLAN tag 101 off as the router only needs to handle the auth (PPPoE)
BT do not provide a list of approved routers as anything beyond the OPNT is beyond their point of demarcation. Likewise, they would not be required to change any configurations on the ONT as they only provide support up to the ONT itself.
The router in situ at the moment is set up correctly to connect as we can see if in session, but the question of is it compatible with the higher speeds, are the cables compatible?
Connection shows as online as of 2026-08-19 10:22:57, so I would also recommend a reboot of site CPE

If you're plugged into WAN1 then thats the one to configure in the interface. (the 2927 doesn't have an modem either so that info is pretty bad to start with).

Autohunt is for a managed system where you've setup multiple connection for it to search through - you need that disabled, it's for a different purpose.

The screenshot is from a working PPPoE on a 2136 router (so simpler version of yours) but the config should be identical (that's a BT circuit, same speed as yours).   How does your config differ ?


Reading between the lines BT are saying you have your config wrong - I tend to agree.

This was a replacement for another Draytek model and that is working absolutely fine other than it is on the older admin interface.
