Websites slow to load when using Draytek AP805 in AP mode was created by David Hunter
Hi - New user here looking for some advice and help.
I recently bought a Draytek Vigor AP805 to give me wifi 6 using my sky broadband and Sky SR203 hub.
Successfully set up in APmode using same SSID and password as sky and switching off Sky Hub AP for both 2.4 & 5Gz - really fast wifi connection speeds and much better coverage throughout our home.
Howwever this only seems to last for around 5-6 hours, after which websites seem to take around 5-10 seconds to load and some pictures fails to load - facebook seems particularly affected by this and sometimes fails to load at all. -
Same situation on all three laptops we have and on all phones.
Problem still exists when using MS Edge rather than Chrome and switching Chrome accelleration on and off makes no diffenece . Google DNS server settins on all latops.
Switching off wifi on Draytek and switching wifi back on on sky router - no problems - bansteering and airtime fairness both switched off.
Has anyone on the forum encountered a similar problem and successfully resovled this?
Thanks in advance DH

Hi there. I just registered here to reply to you.
I happen to have 2 customers with the exact same behaviour. Both use a Fritz!Box (popular german router) and VigorAPs in bridge mode connected via Ethernet. At first everything works fine, but after a while loading websites slows to a crawl. This ends up in some images not loading at all or map tiles in Apple Maps taking forever to display. After disconnecting and reconnecting everything is ok and fast again for a while. This sometimes only lasts a few minutes. Using Ethernet or the built-in WLAN of the router works without problems all the time. One customer has the VigorAP 805, the other has the 1062C. Both brand new, newest firmware installed. Resetting to factory defaults does not help.
DrayTek Support advised me to disable Airtime Fairness which does not help, too. Did you find any solution in the meantime?
I will replace them with another brand if I can't get them to work properly. The weird thing is that my VigorAPs all work flawlessly. I have 3 different models (1060C, 906 and 960C) and they all use bridge mode. The only difference is that my router is also from DrayTek (Vigor 2865) and not something else.

Good Morning Bjorn - Thanks for getting back to me 👍
Nice to know that I am not alone with this problem.
I currently have a ticket open with Draytek Technical Support.on this issue. They have a backup of my AP805 and are running the setup on an AP805 in their test lab. - I am waiting to hear back from them to see if the problem can be replicted in their test envirnment.
Like yourself, I have airtime fairness deselected and also bandwidth steering deselected - no difference at all.
When I was experiencing the problem I have also dropped the bandwidth on the 5Ghz (which all of my laptops and phones connect to) from 160 Mhz to 80 Mhz without seeing any improvement, and lastly, I also changed the mode setting from WiFi 6 to Wifi 5 without noticing any improvement at all . - this really does make me wonder if Draytek have a problem with some chips in their AP's??
I have this morning updated the technical team with your post on the forum and given them your contact details on the forum.
I will keep ypu updated when I hear back from the Draytek Tech Team.
Dave

Hi Bjorn,
I received the following reply from Draytek Technical support this Morning.
"I’ve loaded your configuration onto an AP805 here in the lab and left it running while testing various sites, including Facebook. I haven’t noticed any slowdown or difference in speed or page loading times compared to when the unit is running on default settings. Everything appears to be stable on my side.
This suggests the issue may be related to something specific in your environment rather than the configuration itself. If the problem continues on your end, the next step may be to look more closely at the interaction between the AP805 and the Sky router, or test the AP805 in a different network environment to rule that out."
I wasn't particularly pleased with this response and have responded as follows :-
"As I mentioned to you on Tuesday 30th September, the problem exists every time I connect the AP805.
I have connected it in various locations in my home via my wired network and experienced the same problems.
You suggest it could be something to do with some specifics in my environment (whatever that may mean!) but I think that you are also discounting another possibility - that there could be a fault with My AP805.
I also own another AP - a TP Link RE450 AC1750 which works perfectly when set up in my home in wired AP mode - whilst this operates in WiFI 5 mode, as I informed you the other day , when I change the settings on the AP805 to WiFi 5 the same problems with the AP805 re-occur.
So given this, I find it hard to justify your opinion that "environmental specifics" may be in play here.
I also refer you to the information that I sent to you the other day with reference to another user experiencing the exact same problem with draytek AP's via the Draytek users' forum. - the gentleman is reporting the same problem as myself with 2 of his customers reporting the same issues - I presume that his customers are experiencing these problems in different physical locations each with their own environmental specifics??
Very strange to see a common"environmental issues" link here when other manufacturer's products seem to work fine in those locations - does this not support the suggestion that there may be a problem with the software or hardware on these Draytek products??
The fact remains that Draytek markets and sells this adapter as a simple way of boosting and extending WiFi coverage. I can set up another manufacturer's product to do the same thing and it works perfectly. (I will request via the Users' Forum if Mr Herrman can confirm that other manufacturers products work in his two customers local environments without any of the problems experienced with the draytek products)
I have purchased my Draytek Vigor in good faith - clearly it is not performing as it should be as I am sure you will concur.
It has proved to be a complete waste of money and time and not fit for purpose.
Expecting a normal home owner to continue on struggling with this issue and suggesting that an option would be to "test the AP805 in a different network environment" is, I would suggest, an unrealistic expectation.
What I am really looking for is a refund of my expenditure on this AP805 as it really isn't fit for purpose!
Hopefully we can come to some resolution on this"
I would be interested to here any thoughts that you have on this and if you are able to confirm that the problem you are experiencing with your 2 customers is only present when using the draytek products and isn't present when using another manufacturer's AP I will feed this back?
I've really had enough of this and just wan't to get rid of the Draytek AP805 and replaceit with soemthing that works as it should.
Thanks in advance for your assitance
Dave

Hi Dave,
the german DrayTek support asked me for a configuration file of the AP yesterday and today they wrote that they maybe can provide a beta firmware for the AP1062C next week. Just to clarify: I do IT support and have various clients. Many of them use DrayTek APs that I provided and did the configuration on site. Myself, I am also using DrayTek APs. All of these are all older models and never had any problems. The 2 clients which currently experience the same behaviour as you:
Client a) AVM FritzBox cable router with DrayTek VigorAP805
Client b) AVM FritzBox VDSL router with 3 DrayTek VigorAP1062C
In both cases the APs are connected via Ethernet. Client a) has the AP connected directly to the built-in switch of the router. Client b) has the APs connected to a PoE switch which then goes to the router. Also in both cases the problem persists up to the currently available firmware. I can also confirm that the problem is only with these newer DrayTek APs. Other APs work fine, Ethernet works fine and the built-in WLAN AP of these routers also does work fine. It usually is disabled, because that’s what the APs are for, but for testing purposes I had it enabled.
Client a) will be out of the country until November so we’ll wait until then for a solution, maybe a newer firmware will fix it.
Client b) agreed to wait for max another 1-2 weeks (he has had these APs for several weeks now, glad he’s still patient) for the promised beta firmware.
I will see if DrayTek can provide me with a beta firmware for the 1062C in the coming week and if that fixes it. If not I will replace them with another brand. I always had a good experience with DrayTek in the past and their german support is usually responsive and good. I use their routers at a lot of locations including my own and I also use their switches and APs. This is the first time that something of this magnitude has happened, but I need it solved soon, even if that means driving to the clients and replacing the APs with something else…

Thanks Bjorn, looks like an admission fro Draytek Germany that the problems lie at Drayteks door rather than trying to blame "environmental issues" at users premises!
I have forwarded your comments to Draytek UK for their comments and will keep you posted 👍
Thanks again, Dave
